What Is Hemodialysis Access?

Hemodialysis requires a reliable way for blood to travel from the body to the dialysis machine and back again. This is achieved through a surgically created access site, designed to allow high blood flow and repeated use.

Dr. Kronson provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for all major types of hemodialysis access:

Types of Dialysis Access:

  • Arteriovenous (AV) Fistula
The preferred access type — created by connecting a vein to an artery.

    • Longest-lasting option

    • Lowest infection risk

    • Best overall reliability for dialysis

  • Arteriovenous (AV) Graft
A synthetic tube connecting an artery and vein.

    • Ideal when veins are not suitable for a fistula

    • Matures more quickly

    • Reliable and commonly used

  • Tunneled Dialysis Catheter
A flexible tube placed into a central vein, typically used for temporary or urgent access.

    • Immediate use

    • Higher infection risk

    • Short-term solution until fistula/graft can be used

Dr. Kronson works closely with nephrologists and dialysis centers to ensure each patient receives the most appropriate access type for their health and lifestyle.

When Hemodialysis Access Procedures Are Needed

You may require hemodialysis access creation or revision if you have:

  • Chronic kidney disease approaching end-stage renal failure
  • Difficulty achieving adequate dialysis due to poor access function
  • Pain, swelling, or decreased flow in an existing access
  • Repeated catheter infections
  • A failing AV fistula or graft
  • Urgent need for dialysis treatment

Access creation before dialysis is essential to avoiding infection, catheter complications, and treatment delays. Book your evaluation today.

Hemodialysis Access

How Hemodialysis Access Procedures Work

1. Pre-Procedure Ultrasound Mapping

Vein and artery assessment helps determine whether a fistula or graft is the best option.

2. Anesthesia for Comfort

Local or regional anesthesia keeps the procedure comfortable and safe.

3. Access Creation

  • Fistula: The artery and vein are surgically connected.

  • Graft: A synthetic graft is placed between artery and vein.

  • Catheter: For urgent use, a tunneled catheter is inserted into a large central vein.

4. Access Maturation

Fistulas typically take weeks to mature; grafts may be ready sooner.
Catheters work immediately but are temporary.

5. Ongoing Monitoring

Ultrasound, physical exam, and dialysis feedback ensure the access remains strong and functional. Book an evaluation today

Dr. Kronson and his staff are very professional and caring. I received treatment for venous insuffiency on my right leg first and later on my left leg. I no longer suffer from the condition that was treated for. Dr. Kronson, Angela, and Clyde are very attuned to the needs of their patients. You follow their instructions and you will get the results you are seeking. I heartily recommend this practice!

Dr.J. Kronson literally gave me my life back....!
The best vascular Doctor in Arcadia and surrounding areas. I have been to many but none has taken care of me like Dr. Kronson.
I have been suffering with all sorts of leg issues for the last four years and have given up hope until I came across Dr. Kronson. I have been unable to walk, sit, stand for more than 15 minutes at a time. I have had such severe pain and restless leg syndrome at night and hardly slept. I have gained so much weight and have literally given up hope. This is to name a few and the list goes on and on.

I have had 5 procedures on each leg a total of 10 between July & October 12 was my last post op visit. I felt the difference in my legs after each procedure.
It has been 2 weeks since my last visit and I am able to sit, stand, walk and sleep without any pain. I did my first walk at the rose bowl and I cannot express the gratitude!!
Dr.Kronson does all procedures himself and is professional and has the best bed side manner when dealing with his patients.
If you have any vascular issues I Highly recommend Dr. Kronson.

His staff makes you feel like you are family and his office manager Angela is an absolutely Gem. She takes care of you on arrival and is a woman of her word. I have yet to come across an office like this one.
Clyde who does all the ultrasounds is such a gentleman and not to forget Tristan who is a pleasure to see when you first walk through the door.

Thank You Doctor Kronson from myself and my entire family you are amazing at what you do!!!!!
Sincerely
Salma & Family

Thank you Angela... you Rock!

After I recently returned to Dr. Kronson Vein Institute for treatment on my second leg and experiencing amazing success with the first. I can't express how grateful I am for the care and attention I've received. Every staff member is not only professional but also compassionate. Making me feel valued as well as respected. The team genuinely cares about their patients and goes above and beyond to ensure comfort during every visit. The office is consistently prompt with appointments and very thorough in their procedures. I also appreciate the recent updates to the office, including fresh paint and a welcoming feng shui, which definitely enhances the overall experience. I will always give them the highest rating possible and recommend them to others. The staff, especially the ultrasound specialist treats me like family, and I couldn't be happier with the outcome of my treatments. Appreciate you all with maximum gratitude. Thank you for love and care given
